Probably fish eggs…

I’ve been told by my lovely better half that I’m not allowed to tell the thrilling story of how I was swindled out of $5 over a currency conversion calculator before we even left Australia, so instead (while I have 5 minutes in a departure lounge), I’ll tell you about our stop over in Singapore…

…which is hot and humid, but has an awesome airport. Most of you know that already, but I’ve never been anywhere in south east Asia so I’ve never stopped here before. The airport’s full of entertaining time-killers which I’ll tell you about later if you’re really having trouble sleeping, but we decided to leave the airport and check out the night safari at the zoo, which we’ve heard awesome things about, and which is listed in the airport brochure as something you can do if your stopover is more than 5 hours.

Ours was 6.5 hours so we jumped on the subway and took off. Three transfers and more than an hour later, we got to the bus interchange and found out that it was another 40 minutes each way to the night safari… after a quick look at our watches and boarding passes, and a bit of hasty math, we realised we didn’t have enough time, so we bailed on the safari and hung out at the suburb/shopping mall that served as the bus interchange.

It wasn’t a complete write off though. I got a great photo of the sign that said it was 40 minutes to the night safari, which I’m sure is as good as the actual night safari… but more importantly, Penny had her first bubble tea, which she’d not only never tried, but also never heard of. That NEVER happens in our relationship (it’s usually me saying “what’s broccolini?” or “where does cous cous come from?”), so I was very excited. But my smug sense of superiority only lasted until Penny asked me what the black balls in the bubble tea were, and I revealed that I had no idea, and they were probably fish eggs for all I knew.

In revenge she dragged me around the airport for an hour looking for a fruit salad, but eventually settled on pork dumplings, which smelled like cat food. The good brand, which you think you’d eat yourself if times were tough… but still… my fuss-o-meter powered up and I avoided them. Penny says they were great though.

Then we slept for 2 hours and now we’re waiting for our plane to board. A slow start I know, but try and check back later and I’ll see if I can get some actual China stories to go with our China Holiday blog.

(also if anyone wants to comment… you can use your facebook login below.. which is all very convinient, safe etc etc… and is immensly helpful for the two of us, given that we’re a bit vague on exactly who’s friends look like what and the facebook option gives us your little picture next to your comment. For people who are facebook impaired, there’s a wordpress comment box too.. but you’ll need to put in your email address… so yeah, if you have facebook, use that… )

  1. Hi you two. Jess sent me the blog so I am glad to follow you around China. The night safari alternative sounds fun!!!!! the animals were probably sleeping so at least the airport had some waking and a vairety of walking humans to look at.
Have fun. Love Aunty marg and Uncle Michael.

  2. Bummer about the night safari (damn misleading signs!)And Josh – best to let the calculator incident go, it’s probably the first of many rip offs you’ll encounter over the next few weeks…………!!
Look forward to the next installment
